The
Atlantis - Barbados - Renovation
Many warned me of the challenges of building on the East coast, and me
being me, thought to myself that I needed a good challenge for 2009. Well,
having convinced my wife, Patricia and my Brother in Law of the opportunity
to restore a piece of history, we purchased the property on 18th August
2008, and started fixing it up from 18th September. We thought initially
we could open by Christmas, but when starting the replacement of the roof,
a large beam fell and hit the concrete floor and an enormous chunk of
concrete broke away from the ceiling of the restaurant below crashing
onto what would have been the dining area - Clearly a sign that a closer
look at the structure was needed. Needless to say, our engineer was horrified
at the findings.
It then rained for 8 weeks, retaining walls collapsed, we had an excavator digging for what seemed like an eternity looking for some form of solid ground - I also discovered that the East coast seems to have not much rock - plenty of clay and mud though - another challenge, which I am happy to say, almost 4 months into the renovation, that we are now making good progress with an anticipated completion sometime before November this year.
We
were hoping to find, when replacing the restaurant floor, some treasure
left by Mrs. Maxwell (the owner who renovated the Atlantis about 40 years
ago) but so far, no such luck. My father alwasy told me 'there's no easy
way to make money son'. Thanks to many of our Little Good Harbour guests
and the local population that read our updates - for your well wishes
and support for the project. The East coast is a wonderful unspoilt piece
of this rock - Our intention is to provide a wonderful small hideaway
with all the creature comforts we all expect these days
